Help end the cycle of inequity for young people in our community
A healthy nonprofit board is a peculiar hybrid. Part steward, part compass, part guardrail. It doesn’t run the organization day to day—that’s the staff’s domain—but it ensures the mission stays pointed in the right direction and the engine stays financially sound.
For Youth Initiative (FYI) supports Black, racialized, and newcomer youth as they navigate systemic barriers and access the mentorship and resources they need to thrive. Last year we served 731 young people and distributed over $101,000 in direct support. Working in partnership with staff, our Board sets strategic direction, oversees accountability and risk, and champions FYI in the community.
We’re growing our board
We’re inviting new voices to the table and we’re especially hoping to hear from:
Human Resources leaders — to strengthen our people practices as we grow.
Fundraising and development professionals — to diversify revenue and build sustainability.
Legal professionals — to lend governance, compliance, and risk expertise.
Youth board members, ages 18–30 — with lived experience and fresh perspective. No prior board experience needed; we’ll support you.

The commitment
Board members serve as volunteers and give a few hours each month for monthly meetings, occasional committee work, and community events. Youth members receive orientation and mentorship. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
We are currently inviting interested people to apply. Deadline is August 15, 2026

FYI’s committees bring together board members and community expertise to support sound governance, financial stewardship, program insight, and strong community relationships. Committees review key issues in greater depth and provide recommendations that help the Board make informed decisions while ensuring FYI remains accountable, well-governed, and connected to the community it serves.
