For nearly three decades, FYI has supported youth in building confidence, connection, and opportunities to thrive. Here’s how our journey has grown over the years.

The story of FYI

For 26 years For Youth Initiative has continued to be an integral part of a young person’s journey to adulthood and becoming a leader in their community.

1995

FYI is founded as a pilot project to support young people in reaching their full potential.

2000

FYI becomes officially incorporated as For Youth Initiative in Toronto.

2001

FYI launches its Dixon satellite site and expands programming into arts, life skills, and community development.

2004

FYI obtains charitable status.

2005

FYI relocates to its long-term home at 1652 Keele Street.

2006

The FYI Scholarship Program launches to support youth pursuing education and training.

2008

FYI opens its first dedicated youth community space with a studio, multi-purpose hall, and computer lab.

2009

FYI launches Youth Settlement Services and opens The Bridge location on Eglinton West.

2010

FYI establishes the first youth-focused newcomer settlement site in York South-Weston.

2012

FYI releases AMP program toolkits to share youth development resources across Ontario.

2012

FYI leads a cross-sector task force calling for greater local investment in youth opportunities.

2013

FYI publishes a sector report on supporting young Black and Brown men impacted by violence.

2014

FYI launches R.I.S.E., a justice program supporting youth in conflict with the law.

2015-2018

FYI supports youth leaders who bring community-based projects and innovations to life.

2020

FYI rapidly transitions all programs online during the COVID-19 pandemic. FYI strengthens its hybrid community centre, offering both virtual and in-person youth programming.

2021

For Youth Initiative (FYI) celebrates the opening of its new Oakwood-Vaughan youth space with a ribbon-cutting, launching a second welcoming hub where young people ages 12–29 can access tutoring, career guidance, settlement and justice supports, and a range of services designed to help them learn, plan, and connect.

2023

FYI releases “The PLUG” An Advocacy Guide for Black High School Students in Toronto, co-created with Toronto Youth

Present

Every Year FYI supports 700–800+ young people through integrated programs, providing academic support, mentorship, career preparation, and community connection while continuing to grow as a trusted hub where youth can access the guidance and opportunities they need to move forward.
