“I’m New to Canada”

Fernando’s Story: Confidence, Connection, and Community

Where it Started

Fernando first met FYI staff during a school visit. Their warmth and openness stood out. He started attending newcomer-focused programs, joining English Conversation Circles and taking part in Youth Empowering Parents (YEP), where he built both language skills and connection.

How FYI Showed Up

One of Fernando’s proudest moments came when he helped launch Newcomer Connect, a lunch program at his school designed specifically for newcomer students.
“It felt good to be part of something that helped other people like me,” he says. With FYI’s consistent encouragement and guidance, Fernando has gained confidence, not just in English, but in himself.

“They seemed really friendly and supportive. I wanted to be part of something where I could feel included.”

How Support Took Shape

  • Newcomer programs building language and connection
English Conversation Circles and YEP participation
Ongoing mentorship building confidence and belonging

Fernando is still exploring what his future might look like, but he’s doing it with more clarity, more language, and more community than when he started.
FYI helped him see that asking for help is a strength and offering it to others is leadership.

Where He Is Now

“When I talk to FYI staff, they always remind me they’re here to support and guide me. That makes a big difference.”

Program Highlight: Newcomer Support
