“I’m Going to University”
Ximena’s Story: From Newcomer to Future Social Worker
Where it Started
Adjusting to life in a new country was overwhelming at first. Ximena remembers struggling with English, making friends, and understanding how things worked. But when she connected with FYI, things slowly began to shift. Her newcomer social worker helped break things down and walked with her through the day-to-day, writing support letters, navigating resources, and showing her that she belonged.
How FYI Showed Up
Through FYI programs like Youth Empowering Parents (YEP), resume building workshops, and community events, Ximena gained more than skills, she built confidence. She began to see herself not just as someone adjusting, but someone with something to give.
That clarity helped her shape a new dream: to become a social worker and support other youth the way FYI supported her.
“FYI helped me feel welcome and supported. They were always there when I had questions or needed guidance.”
