Introducing FYI’s Interim Executive Director - Carolyn Acker

A message from Doug Brooks, Chair, For Youth Initiative Board of Directors

As you may know, Shaneeza Nazseer Ally, the Executive Director for For Youth Initiative, is currently on Maternity Leave returning September 2018.

To ensure that the organization maintains strong leadership and continuity during this time, the Board of Directors has hired an Interim Executive Director, Carolyn Acker. Reporting to the Board of Directors, Carolyn will provide leadership to FYI Staff over the next year to continue executing on Year 2 of our 2016-19 Strategic Plan.

Carolyn is a retired not for profit executive who has a passion for community development. She is the founder of Pathways to Education, whose mission is to provide the resources and network of support for youth in low-income communities to graduate from high school and build the foundation for a successful future.

While working as Executive Director with the Regent Park Community Health Centre, she saw an opportunity to support the youth of the community and took it upon herself to research and identify what kids and families needed to reduce the high-school drop out rate and poverty in these neighborhoods. The Program was very successful and expanded to 5 more sites during her tenure with the Organization. Prior to leaving Pathways, Carolyn was responsible for finding her successor and worked alongside the new Executive Director  for 3 months, mentoring the individual and the team.

She’s worked with Major Donors, Community Relations, and having started a Foundation understands the operational requirements to run an organization successfully. Since leaving Pathways to Education Canada, Carolyn has worked as a consultant with Social Service organizations and CARE Centres, providing strategic vision and operational excellence consulting.

We are confident that with the organization’s dedicated Staff and Carolyn’s leadership, FYI will continue to thrive and serve our community.

We wish Shaneeza all the best during her leave of absence with her family.
